Malibu Wakesetter 23 LSV Used Buying Guide (2026)

You have two tabs open: a 2014 Wakesetter 23 LSV at $62,500 and a 2018 at $95,000, and in the photos the only obvious difference is the tower. The 23 LSV has been the best-selling towboat in the world for more than a decade, which means there are a lot of them on the used market, they span at least five distinct technology generations, and the gap between a clean one and a tired one is wider than the listing photos will ever show you. This guide tells you which generation you are actually looking at, what the ballast and surf hardware costs when it fails, and the point where hours stop being a talking point and start being a repair bill.

The short answer

We track US used-boat listings continuously. Between July 7 and August 22, 2026 we logged 227 listing observations for the Wakesetter 23 LSV. Collapsing repeats and duplicate postings leaves 52 distinct priced listings across 20 states — California alone accounted for 12 of them, with Texas, Tennessee, Washington, Nevada, Minnesota, Kentucky and Arizona behind it. Within that middle band, the 2017-2019 boats on their own (n=11) asked $74,950 to $115,000. The 2010-2016 group sat lower, but with only 8 listings behind it we are not going to hand you a median we do not trust.

Set that against new. A 2024 Wakesetter 23 LSV started at roughly $169,225, and a well-optioned 2026 build carries a sticker well north of $200,000. That is why a 2018 boat still asks near $95,000 — the 23 LSV depreciates slowly, and the used market prices it against a new boat most buyers cannot reach. The practical read: the hull is rarely what you are paying for. The ballast system, the surf hardware, the engine’s build year and the hour meter decide where inside those bands a specific boat belongs.

Which generation you are actually buying

“23 LSV” has covered very different boats. Get this straight before you compare two listings.

Two lines in that table move real money. A pre-2012 boat has no factory Surf Gate, and retrofitting a proper surf system is not a weekend job — if surfing is why you are buying, a 2011 boat at a tempting price is the wrong boat, not a bargain. And 2019 is the year Malibu stopped buying engines from Indmar, who had built Monsoons since 1996, and began building them in-house in Tennessee. Neither choice is bad, but parts, dealer support and diagnostic access differ, so know which one is bolted into the boat you are looking at.

The hours question that decides the price

Hour meters are the single biggest lever on a 23 LSV’s asking price, and the single easiest thing to misread. The Monsoon is a marinized GM V8 inboard — the 2024 M5Di makes 360 hp and 400 lb-ft. Like other inboard gas engines, it typically wants major work somewhere in the 1,000 to 1,500 hour window, not the 2,500-plus you would expect from a four-stroke outboard. But on this boat the engine is rarely the first thing to cost you. The support systems are:

  • Under 200 hrs. Top of the band. Verify the number against the Command Center display and service invoices, not the seller’s memory.
  • 300–500 hrs. The value sweet spot. Engine barely broken in, but pumps, impellers and actuators are entering their second life. Budget $1,500–$3,000 for wear items.
  • 600–900 hrs. Often a demo, a rental, or a wake-school boat. Ask that question directly. Expect a raw-water pump, manifolds, or transmission service within a couple of seasons.
  • 1,000+ hrs. Buyable only at a steep discount with documented major service in hand.

Divide hours by age before you judge any of it. A 2018 boat with 180 hours ran about 30 hours a year and was babied. A 2018 with 600 ran 100 a year and worked for a living. Ballast, Surf Gate and the wedge: where the money actually hides

This is the section that separates a $62,500 boat from a $62,500 boat plus $6,000. Every one of these components is a wear item, none of them can be verified in a driveway, and the parts prices are public.

Read that table twice. A 2017 boat that needs both hydraulic Surf Gate actuators and a wedge actuator is a five-figure conversation, on a boat whose bilge looks perfectly clean in the listing photos. So test it. On the water, insist on a complete ballast cycle: fill every tank to 100 percent, watch the fill times against each other, then dump it all and confirm fast, clean drainage. A tank that fills noticeably slower than its neighbors has a dying pump. Then deploy and retract both Surf Gate gates and run the wedge through its full travel, twice. Engine, drivetrain and the things a survey finds

The 23 LSV’s inboard V-drive layout is why it surfs well and why the expensive parts live where you cannot see them. Budget against these:

  • Exhaust manifolds and risers. Freshwater boats commonly get 800-1,200 hours; saltwater far less. Replacement runs $1,200-$2,500. Rust streaks at the manifolds or milky oil on the dipstick means stop.
  • V-drive transmission. Listen for whine, check the fluid for a burnt smell or metal glitter. A rebuild is $2,500-$5,000.
  • Cutless bearing and shaft. Grab the prop shaft and push it side to side. More than slight play is a worn bearing at $300-$700 with a haul-out. Vibration at speed suggests a bent shaft from a strike.
  • Strut and rudder. Look for impact marks and hairline cracks where the strut meets the hull. A logged grounding on a surf boat is a real red flag.

Recalls and the warranty transfer — two free checks

Run the hull identification number through the US Coast Guard recall database before you make an offer. Malibu Boats has nine campaigns on file — eight under MIC MB2, plus one Axis campaign under MIC AWR — and several are still listed as open:

The USCG classes the first and third as high severity, and both still show an open disposition. That does not mean the boat in front of you is unfixed — it means you should ask the seller for the dealer paperwork proving the campaign was performed, and a Malibu dealer can confirm it by HIN in a phone call. The second free check is the warranty. Malibu’s limited warranty allows a one-time transfer to a second non-commercial owner within 60 months of the original retail purchase, subject to an authorized-dealer inspection at your expense and a transfer fee — $750 in the 2018-era statements, $500 in some older ones. On a 2022 or 2023 boat that transfer can be worth thousands. It is also easy to blow: the window runs from the original purchase date, not from your purchase date, and the paperwork has to go through a dealer. Pull the warranty statement for that specific model year and read it before you close.

What to do next

Work in this order and you will not overpay:

  1. Fix the generation. Confirm model year, then confirm Surf Gate (2012+), wedge generation, and whether the engine is Indmar-built (through 2018) or Malibu-built (2019+).
  2. Get true hours from the Command Center display and service invoices, and divide by age. Ask outright whether it was ever a demo, rental or school boat.
  3. Run the HIN through the USCG recall database and ask for dealer proof on anything that hits.
  4. Check the warranty clock — original purchase date plus 60 months — and price the transfer in.
  5. Sea trial with a full ballast cycle, both surf gates, and the wedge through full travel. Twice.
  6. Survey and a mechanical check before money moves — manifolds, oil, V-drive fluid, shaft play.
  7. Price the findings. Every dead pump, actuator and manifold set from the tables above comes off the asking price, in writing.
