What the 4.3 actually is, and why it is everywhere
The 4.3 L V6 is the marine version of the Chevrolet 90-degree V6 — 262 cubic inches, a 4.00 inch bore and a 3.48 inch stroke, essentially a small-block V8 with two cylinders removed. General Motors built the original generation of that engine from 1985 to 2014, which is exactly why it filled so many boat transoms: parts were cheap, mechanics everywhere knew it, and it made enough power to push a 19 to 22 foot fiberglass runabout without the fuel bill of a V8.
Mercury eventually moved on. The company developed its own 4.5 L V6 at 200 to 250 hp on a different stroke to take over the slot. Parts catalogs split 4.3 exhaust components at roughly 2002: earlier engines use the older wet-joint manifolds and elbows, later ones use Mercury’s dry-joint design. Problem 1: manifolds and risers, the bill everyone forgets
This is the defining failure of the 4.3 and of every raw-water-cooled marine gas engine. Sea water runs through jackets cast into the exhaust manifolds and the risers above them to keep exhaust temperatures survivable. Cast iron plus water plus heat cycling equals rust, and the rust grows from the inside where you cannot see it. Eventually the passage wall between the water jacket and the exhaust gas perforates.
What happens next is the expensive part. Water flows down the exhaust port and sits on an open valve. You get a rusted valve, then a rusted cylinder wall, then water in the oil, and in a bad case hydrolock — the engine tries to compress a cylinder full of water and bends a connecting rod. How to check it in the driveway: pull the dipstick and look for milky or coffee-colored oil. Pull a riser bolt or tap the manifolds and listen for the dead thud of a rust-packed casting. Look for rust streaks running down from the riser-to-manifold joint. And on any 4.3 older than about eight years with no receipt, assume it is due.
Problem 2: the freeze crack that ends the block
This is the failure that turns a $7,000 boat into scrap, and it is entirely preventable.
The 4.3 is raw-water cooled unless it was ordered with the optional closed cooling system. That means lake or sea water sits inside the block, the manifolds, the risers and the hoses all winter. Water expands about nine percent when it freezes. Cast iron does not. The block splits — usually along the thin outer cylinder walls, sometimes at a core plug, very often in the manifolds first because their castings are thinner.
Two details make this worse than it sounds on a used boat:
- Draining is not automatic. Older 4.3s have separate drain plugs on both sides of the block and on each manifold, plus hoses that hold water even after the plugs are out. Later engines got a single-point drain system. A previous owner who pulled two plugs and called it done left water in the manifolds.
- Antifreeze in the block is not proof. Running pink antifreeze through the engine is a supplement to draining, not a substitute. It dilutes with whatever water was already inside, and diluted antifreeze freezes.

Once you clear the exhaust and the block, the rest of the 4.3’s problem list is ordinary and affordable — but on a boat this cheap, three ordinary items add up fast.

The impeller deserves its own note. On an Alpha drive the raw-water pump lives inside the drive leg, not on the engine, so replacing it means dropping the drive. A shop doing it will quite reasonably suggest doing bellows at the same time, which is why the two jobs are usually quoted together.
Problem 4: the drive will cost you more than the engine
On a boat this age the leg is the bigger liability. Bellows age on a calendar — roughly five years — and a split U-joint bellows can sink the boat at the dock.
