Verify Outboard Hours: 7 Checks the Seller Can't Fake

The listing says 320 hours. The boat is fourteen years old, the seller is friendly, and nothing in the photos tells you whether that number came off an engine computer or off a $40 meter someone zip-tied to a spark plug wire last spring. Hours move the asking price by thousands, which is exactly why the figure is worth verifying — and exactly why some sellers would rather you didn’t. Here is how to get the real number, what a dealer can pull that you cannot, and the physical evidence that exposes a gauge that is lying.

The short answer

On any outboard with an engine computer — broadly, fuel-injected and direct-injected motors from the late 1990s onward — the hours are stored in the ECM, and a dealer can read them with a scan tool in well under an hour. Book that scan. Most shops bill it as a half-hour to an hour of labor, call it $75 to $200, and make it a condition of your offer rather than a favor you ask for.

On a carbureted outboard with no ECM, there is nothing stored to read. No internal record exists. The gauge is the only claim that will ever be made, and you verify it with wear evidence and receipts instead of electronics.

Either way, keep in mind why you wanted the number. Hours tell you what kind of failure you are inheriting, not whether the engine is healthy today. A verified hour count and a bad compression test still means walk away.

Where the hour number actually lives

Three different things can display “hours,” and they are not equally trustworthy.

Yamaha spells the distinction out in its own owner FAQ. Hours on the older Multifunction Tachometer “are measured when the engine is running,” while hours on the Command Link tachometer “are received directly from the ECU (computer) on the engine.” Yamaha also confirms the half that helps you: “The total hours of operation for both style tachometers cannot be reset.” Only the trip meter resets, and on Command Link, the maintenance-interval counter.

Read that carefully, because it is the whole game. A gauge that counts for itself can be defeated by replacing the gauge — a $150 part and an afternoon. A gauge that mirrors the ECU can only be defeated by replacing the module, which costs real money and leaves evidence a technician can see.

What a dealer can pull, by brand

Every major outboard builder runs proprietary dealer software over a diagnostic port under the cowl. You cannot buy most of it, which is the point — the person reading the engine is not the person selling you the boat.

Ask for the printout, not a verbal summary. “It came back fine” is not a document, and the fault log is often worth more than the hour count. An engine that logged repeated over-temperature events at 400 hours is telling you about a cooling problem the seller may not even know exists — and overheating is how a good-looking powerhead ends up scored.

Two practical notes. First, the scan needs the engine’s diagnostic connector accessible, so it happens with the cowl off, at the boat or at the shop. Second, hire the technician yourself. A scan arranged and paid for by the seller is the same conflict of interest as the seller’s surveyor.

The five ways an hour number goes wrong

Most wrong hour numbers are not fraud. They are history nobody wrote down.

  1. The gauge was replaced. Corrosion, lightning, a dash refresh, a cracked lens. The new meter starts at zero and the seller honestly repeats what it says.
  2. The powerhead or ECM was replaced. A rebuilt or replacement powerhead can arrive with its own module and its own hour history. That is not bad news by itself — it may be the best thing about the engine — but it means the displayed hours describe a different engine than the one the boat was built with.
  3. The meter counts the wrong event. Some simple counters advance on ignition power rather than actual running. A boat that sat at the dock with the key on logs hours it never ran.
  4. Twins disagree. Port reads 780, starboard reads 240. One engine was replaced or one gauge failed, and nobody mentioned it in the ad.
  5. The number was always soft. “Approximately 400.” Sellers round down, and an estimate repeated across three listing sites starts to sound like a fact.

None of these require dishonesty. All of them cost you money if you pay for the number rather than the engine.

The physical tells when the number is wrong

An engine can hide its history. A boat cannot. Wear accumulates in places nobody thinks to refresh, and it should match the story.

Then take the cowl off and look at four things. The cowl seal should show an even impression, not a fresh one. The powerhead paint on a genuinely low-hour engine has no salt bloom or bubbling around the exhaust. The spark plug electrodes tell you roughly how much combustion has happened and whether one cylinder is running differently from its neighbors. And the gearcase oil, drained into a clear cup, should be clean and honey-colored — milky means a failed seal and water intrusion regardless of what the meter says.

Cross-checks that cost nothing

  • Call the servicing dealer. Ask the seller which shop maintained the engine, then ask that shop to confirm the work with the owner’s permission. Repair orders are keyed to the engine serial number, and a receipt from three years ago showing 610 hours against a gauge reading 480 today ends the conversation immediately.
  • Find the boat’s earlier listings. Boats get listed, pulled, and relisted. A cached ad from two seasons back stating different hours is free evidence.
  • Read the receipts for hour stamps. Technicians write the meter reading on the invoice. Line those up chronologically and the curve should climb smoothly.

  • Ask in writing. The questions to ask a boat seller include this one: are these hours from the ECU or from an installed meter, and has the powerhead, ECM or gauge ever been replaced?

There is no boat odometer act

This surprises buyers who assume car rules apply. As of August 2026 there is no federal hour-meter disclosure requirement for recreational vessels. The federal odometer regime NHTSA enforces is built around motor vehicles, which 49 U.S.C. § 30102(a) defines as “a vehicle driven or drawn by mechanical power and manufactured primarily for use on public streets, roads, and highways.” An outboard bolted to a transom is not that.

What that leaves you is contract law. Write the hour figure into the bill of sale as a representation — “seller represents engine hours are 412 as displayed on the engine ECM” — and you convert a sales line into something enforceable under your state’s fraud and consumer-protection statutes. What to do next

Work it in this order and you never have to take the seller’s word for anything.

  1. Ask, before you drive anywhere: are the hours from the engine ECU or from an installed meter, and has the gauge, module or powerhead ever been replaced? The answer, or the hesitation, sorts the listing before you spend a Saturday.
  2. Photograph the gauge yourself at the boat, cold, before the engine is started. Note the exact reading.
  3. Book an independent dealer scan on any EFI or DFI outboard and ask for the printed report — hours, fault log, and any over-rev or overheat events.
  4. Run a compression test the same visit. Hours describe risk; compression describes condition. You need both numbers on the same day.
  5. Walk the boat for wear that contradicts the story — helm, bolsters, non-skid, anodes, trailer tire date codes, cowl seal, gearcase oil.
  6. Line the receipts up chronologically and check that the hour stamps climb.
  7. Put the verified figure in the bill of sale. If the seller refuses, price the engine as an unknown and make an offer that survives a repower.

If a scan turns up hours far above the ad, you have not lost the boat — you have gained a number to negotiate against. That is a different conversation than the one you would have had, and a much better one. FAQ

Can outboard engine hours be rolled back?

Not the way a car odometer can. On a fuel-injected outboard the hours live in the engine's ECM, and Yamaha states in its own owner FAQ that total hours on either of its tachometer styles cannot be reset — only the trip meter and the maintenance-interval counter reset. What actually happens is simpler: someone replaces the gauge, the module, or the powerhead, and the displayed number starts over. That is why you read the ECM rather than the dash.

How much does it cost to have a dealer pull real engine hours?

Most marine shops treat a diagnostic scan as a half-hour to an hour of labor, so expect roughly $75 to $200 depending on local shop rates and whether the boat comes to them. Some dealers waive it if you are already paying for a mechanical survey. Against a powerhead rebuild that starts around $3,500, it is the cheapest number you will buy in the entire purchase.

What should I do if the dash gauge and the ECM hours disagree?

Ask why before you assume fraud. Legitimate causes are common: a replaced gauge, a rebuilt or swapped powerhead, or an aftermarket meter installed years after the engine was new. Get the explanation in writing along with the receipt that supports it. If the seller cannot explain the gap and will not put the hour figure in the bill of sale, price the engine as an unknown.
