Yamaha used-boat buyer's guide

What Yamaha is on the used market

Yamaha's 60,000+ registered hulls in our sample split into two distinct products: WaveRunner personal watercraft and Yamaha jet boats (the AR/SX/242/252/255 lines). Both ride on the same reputation — Yamaha's marine engines are the most trusted in the industry — and that reputation is largely earned: the naturally aspirated MR-1 and TR-1 powerplants are among the most durable engines in powersports.

Jet boats deserve special note: they're the dominant tow-sports value play, offering wake-capable 21–25 ft boats at prices well under inboard competitors, with twin-engine redundancy on larger models.

Known issues to inspect

On WaveRunners, supercharged SVHO/SHO models carry the same logic as supercharged Sea-Doos: verify service intervals and price unknowns in. Naturally aspirated VX/EX models are the low-risk pick and the easiest used PWC purchase in the market.

On jet boats, inspect the pump tunnels and wear rings (rock and sand damage from shallow-water use is common and visible), confirm both engines show similar hours on twins (a big mismatch suggests a replacement or a problem), and check the swim platform and tower hardware for stress cracking. Cleanout plugs and intermediate bearings are routine but verify they're not seized.

Resale and value character

Yamaha resale is the strongest in the jet category — the engine reputation props up values, and naturally aspirated WaveRunners are arguably the most liquid sub-$10K asset on the water. Jet boats hold value well against sterndrive competitors of the same vintage; the discount they carry against inboard wakeboats narrows every year.
