Yamaha F150 Problems: What to Check Before You Buy (2026)

The listing says “Yamaha F150, runs great,” and you already know that engine is supposed to be the safe choice. What you cannot tell from the photos is whether this one got flushed after every saltwater trip for twelve years or never got flushed at all. That difference does not show on the cowling and it does not show in the hour meter — and on the kind of boat an F150 hangs off, the engine is often worth more than the hull it is bolted to.
The short answer
There is no Yamaha F150 exhaust-corrosion recall, and there is no cursed model-year range. We checked Yamaha’s own published service campaign list on 23 August 2026. The F150 appears in exactly two campaigns, both scoped by serial number rather than model year, and neither one is about corrosion.
So the year-range question buyers arrive with is the wrong question. On an F150, corrosion is decided by three things you can verify in twenty minutes at the dock: what water it lived in, whether it was flushed, and whether anyone ever replaced the anodes. Everything below tells you how to check each one, and what to do with the answer when it comes back bad.

Two things to take from that table. First, the VST fuel-overflow campaign is a real, free, dealer-performed fix — and it is the single most useful serial-number check you can run on an older F150, because an engine that never had it done is still carrying the defect. Second, O2018-001 is a genuine gap: Yamaha lists four narrow serial bands but does not publish what the defect is. That is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to hand the serial number to a Yamaha dealer and ask them to pull the unit status before you buy, which they can do in minutes and at no cost to you.
Watch the model code carefully while you do it. The VF150 is not an F150 — it is the V MAX SHO. Campaign O2014-007, in an owner letter dated 11 August 2014, covered the VF150 for ECU mapping that could not adequately detect engine knock on certain gasoline formulations, and the remedy was a free ECU replacement. That campaign does not apply to the F150, and sellers conflate the two constantly.
”F150” is two different engines, sold side by side
This trips up more buyers than any failure mode. Yamaha currently sells two distinct in-line fours both badged F150, and the MSRP list effective 1 July 2026 prices them separately:

The mechanical 2.7L measures 94 x 96.2 mm bore and stroke and weighs 509 lb in 20-inch mechanical trim. The DEC 2.8L measures 96 x 96.2 mm and weighs 522 lb. Both run a 2.00:1 gear ratio and put out 35 or 50 amps at wide-open throttle depending on version. Serial prefixes matter more than badges: 63P is the 2.7L F150 family that appears in both published campaigns.
Yamaha’s corrosion defense on these engines is a proprietary YDC-30 aluminum alloy plus what it calls the Phaze Five electro-deposited anti-corrosive paint system, described as a five-layer barrier. That is real engineering and it is why these engines survive salt as well as they do. It is not a substitute for flushing, and it does nothing for a sacrificial anode that was last replaced by the first owner.
Where salt actually attacks an F150
An outboard dumps its cooling water into the exhaust stream and sends both down through the midsection and out the propeller hub. That means the exhaust passage inside the midsection is the one place on the engine where hot exhaust gas, raw cooling water and aluminum all meet at once — and it is the one place you cannot see from outside the cowling. This is the mechanism behind every “the outside looked perfect” story you have read.
Nothing about it is model-year specific. It is a function of exposure and maintenance, which is exactly what Yamaha’s own maintenance guidance targets. Yamaha calls for the engine flush procedure after each use, especially in salt or brackish water, and structures the rest of the schedule around the first 20 hours, then every 50 hours, then annually or every 100 hours. Its 100-Hour Service Kit for the F150 contains the water pump, spark plugs and anodes — Yamaha bundles those three together because they are the three consumables that decide how long the engine lives.
An engine that got that service on schedule has had fresh anodes protecting it roughly every season. An engine that did not has been running unprotected aluminum in salt water for years. Same model year, completely different risk.

That is the practical reason this engine matters: you will meet it. And 584 of those 805 Yamaha listings — 73% — sit in the 23 states with ocean or Gulf coastline. Location is a proxy, not proof of saltwater use, but it tells you which way to lean when the seller shrugs about flushing.
Narrowing to listings whose title names both Yamaha and a 150 gives 76 active boats. This is a text match on the title, so treat it as a directional read on the segment rather than a model-precise index — some of those 150s are hull model numbers, not horsepower. Within that cut:

Hold that median next to the MSRP table above. The median asking price for the entire boat is $18,500. A bare new 2.7L F150XD is $18,265 — and Yamaha’s own note on that price list states plainly that installation and rigging charges are not included in MSRP. On half the boats in this segment, a repower costs more than the seller is asking for the whole rig. That single fact should govern how hard you inspect.
The inspection, in the order that saves you money
Do these in sequence. The cheap checks come first for a reason — most bad F150s fail on step two or three, and you never have to pay for step six.

What to do next
- Get the serial number before you drive anywhere. Ask for a photo of the serial label. Call a Yamaha dealer and have them check unit status against campaigns O2014-006 and O2018-001. This is free and it takes one phone call.
- Ask one question about flushing and listen to the whole answer. “Walk me through how you flush it” separates owners from storytellers faster than any inspection you can run.
- Look at the anodes before you look at anything else on the boat. They are the cheapest honest witness on the engine.
- Price the deal against $18,265, not against zero. That is Yamaha’s 1 July 2026 MSRP for a bare 2.7L F150XD, rigging excluded. If a survey or a compression test turns up a real problem, that number is what you are negotiating against — and it is bigger than the asking price on half the boats in this segment.
- Pay for the diagnostic scan. On an engine this expensive, it is the highest-leverage money in the entire purchase. Engine hours are the wrong headline; verified condition is the real one.
- Get a fair-price read before you make the offer. Paste the listing and get an instant verdict — a Buy Score, the red flags, and where the asking price sits against live comparable boats, before you call the seller back.
The F150 deserves its reputation. It just does not extend that reputation to an engine nobody ever flushed. Check the serial, check the anodes, check the water it lived in — and let the seller’s answers, not the model year, set your price.

No. As of 23 August 2026, Yamaha's public service-campaign list names the F150 in exactly two campaigns — O2014-006 and O2018-001 — and neither is a corrosion campaign. O2014-006, dated 10 June 2014, covers a Vapor Separator Tank float needle valve seat that was not properly chamfered and could let fuel overflow.
