Grumman used-boat buyer's guide

What Grumman is on the used market

Grumman boats came out of the aircraft company's aluminum expertise after WWII, and the 5,000 registered hulls in our sample are dominated by canoes and small jon/utility boats from the 1950s–1990s. This is a legacy market: the marine division's nameplate has passed through Marathon/OMC history, and essentially every Grumman you'll see listed is decades old.

Known issues to inspect

Aircraft-grade stretch-formed aluminum is why these still float: the hulls outlast everything around them. Inspect for the age-appropriate items — loose or weeping rivets, keel wear-through from decades of beaching, crude patch repairs, and on square-stern models the transom wood (assume original and tired).

Canoes are the simplest used purchase in boating: look for hull deformation (oil-canning), cracked ribs, and seat/thwart condition. On powered jons, the ancient outboard usually isn't worth the hull it's bolted to — value the boat bare and treat any running engine as a bonus, not a priced asset.

Resale and value character

Grumman canoes are a genuine keep-forever asset with a stable collector-adjacent floor — a straight 17-footer has cost $400–900 for twenty years and will cost that in ten more. Jons and utilities trade purely on condition. Nothing here appreciates meaningfully, but nothing depreciates either; it's the rare corner of boating where you can't really get hurt.
