MerCruiser 5.7 and 350 MAG Problems: 7 Failures, Real Costs

You are standing next to a 26-foot cruiser with a MerCruiser 5.7 and 900 hours on the meter, and the seller keeps saying the engine is bulletproof. He is half right. The GM 350 under that hatch is one of the most durable blocks ever bolted into a boat — and almost nothing that will cost you money on this engine is the block. The bill comes from the iron, rubber and wiring attached to it, and most of it arrives on a calendar, not on an hour meter.
The short answer
The 5.7 and the 350 MAG do not fail as engines. They fail as raw-water-cooled systems. The single item that kills more of these deals than everything else combined is the exhaust manifold and riser set: $1,500 to $3,500 installed per engine, due every 5 to 7 years in salt water and 8 to 10 years in fresh, regardless of hours. Second place goes to a bad winterization, which cracks a manifold for $400 to $1,200 or the block itself for $4,000 to $8,000.
So the question to ask a seller is not “how many hours?” It is “what year were the manifolds and risers done, and do you have the receipt?” An “I don’t know” on a ten-year-old salt boat is a documented, quantifiable repair you now own — which makes it a negotiating number, not a dealbreaker.
First, it is not a big block
Half the listings you will read get this wrong, and it changes what you should expect to pay. The MerCruiser 5.7L is a marinized GM small-block V8 of 350 cubic inches. It shares its architecture with the 4.3L V6 — the 4.3 is essentially a 350 with two cylinders removed — which is why the two engines break in almost exactly the same places. MerCruiser’s real big blocks are the 454, 502, 496 and 8.1L. Those carry different parts prices and different drive requirements. If a seller is calling a 5.7 a big block, he is repeating something he heard, which tells you how much of the rest of his description to verify.

Mercury wound the 5.7-liter family down in the mid-2010s in favor of the 6.2L, so anything you buy now is at least a decade old. Age, not hours, is the governing variable on nearly every failure below.
The seven failures that actually cost money

Two things to notice. First, only one line in that table is the engine itself. Second, the drive hanging off the transom is a separate budget entirely — bellows, gimbal bearing, U-joints and the transom assembly all age out on their own schedule, and that is where the other half of the money goes. Why manifolds are the whole story
A raw-water-cooled 5.7 pumps lake or sea water through cast-iron exhaust manifolds and out through the risers. Iron plus water plus heat cycling equals rust from the inside, where you cannot see it. Eventually the wall between the water jacket and the exhaust passage perforates, and water goes into a cylinder instead of out the back.
That is the failure mode that turns a $2,500 job into a $6,000 one. Water sitting on a piston overnight rusts the ring pack, and a slug of water on the next start can bend a rod. The engine that “ran perfect at the sea trial” can be a rebuild eight weeks later.
What changes the odds:
- Closed cooling (a heat exchanger, so the block and manifolds see antifreeze instead of raw water) dramatically extends manifold and block life. If the boat has it and the fluid is clean, this whole section gets much cheaper. Ask; do not assume.

- Sitting is not protection. A boat used 15 hours a year still corrodes on the calendar, and it adds dried impellers and stale fuel on top.
Inspect for rust streaks at the manifold-to-riser joints, ask the mechanic to pull a riser bolt or two, and pull the dipstick before anything else. Milky oil is either a deal-killer or a five-figure renegotiation.

Put the repair against the boat’s value
This is the arithmetic buyers skip. A 5.7 does not need to be broken to be a bad buy — it only needs to need more work than the hull is worth.
Here is what boats actually ask in the size and era where the 5.7 lives. These figures come from 517 active listings in our database, 21 to 32 feet, model years 1990 to 2010:

Now overlay the repairs. A single-engine manifold job at $2,500 is 31% of the median 1990–1995 boat. Add a $1,200 bellows and gimbal service and you are at 46% of the hull’s asking price before you have fixed anything that was actually broken.
And a repower ends the argument. A sterndrive engine-and-drive package runs $8,000 to $15,000 in hardware and $13,000 to $24,000 installed, per our repowering a boat cost breakdown. Against an $8,000 median 1990s hull, that is not a repair decision — it is a reason to buy a different boat. The math only works on the newer bands, and only when the rest of the boat is sound.
The inspection list to run before you pay
Every item here is cheap or free, and each one catches a four-figure surprise.
- Pull the dipstick cold. Milky, tan or over-full oil means water intrusion. Stop there.
- Ask for the manifold and riser replacement date, in writing. No receipt means budget the full job.
- Look for rust streaks at manifold-riser joints and rusty water in the bilge under the engine.
- Check for closed cooling and test the coolant. It changes your ten-year budget substantially.
- Cold-start it yourself. Insist the engine is stone cold when you arrive. A warmed-up engine hides hard starting, low compression and a weak ignition module.
- Compression test all eight cylinders. You want readings within about 10% of one another. One low hole next to a corroded riser is the classic water-ingestion signature.
- Inspect the block drain points for fresh paint, sealant or welds — the signature of a freeze-crack repair.
- Pull the drive’s gear-lube plug. Milky lube means seals, and it means the drive comes off.

If the seller resists a cold start or a compression test, that refusal is your answer. There is always another 5.7 — there are thousands of them.
What to do next
Work in this order and you will not get hurt on one of these engines.
- Date the manifolds before you count the hours. Hours tell you about the block; the calendar tells you about everything that will actually bill you. If they are unknown on a boat older than five salt years, put $2,500 per engine into your offer and say so out loud.

- Spend the $300 to $700 on a mechanical survey. A hull surveyor is not an engine mechanic, and the engine is where the money is on this boat.

What is the difference between a 5.7L and a 350 MAG?
Same 350 cubic-inch small block, different tune and fuel system. The plain 5.7L was sold carbureted and later with throttle-body and multi-port injection at roughly 250 to 260 horsepower. The 350 MAG MPI is the high-output multi-port version at about 300 horsepower, with a hotter cam and better breathing. The MAG is the stronger engine, but it also sits at the top of what an Alpha drive is rated to handle.
